What are psychosomatic complaints?

Psychosomatic complaints are physical complaints, such as headaches, abdominal pain and fatigue, which are caused or aggravated by psychological or emotional factors. These complaints can be very disruptive in daily life and lead to absenteeism from work and school, reduced productivity and reduced quality of life. Fortunately, there are effective treatments for people with psychosomatic complaints.

Psycho - soma

Psycho soma is a holistic approach to physical and mental health that combines psychotherapy and somatic (body-based) awareness practices. It is based on the belief that emotional and physical well-being are interrelated, and that both must be addressed to achieve sustainable health.

Underlying cause of the psychosomatic complaints

The first step in the treatment of psychosomatic complaints is to determine the underlying cause. This often involves examining the patient's mental and emotional history to determine possible causes of the symptoms.

It is also important to rule out any medical conditions that may be contributing to the physical symptoms. Once the cause of the symptoms has been determined, treatment can begin.

Which therapies are used in my practice to treat psychosomatic complaints?

First of all, it is important to find the cause of the complaints. I have often written about my daughter, who had panic attacks and headaches, a kind of psychosomatic complaints. You can read more about it here.

The following I use in practice and to find and treat a cause:

  • Body-oriented psychotherapy
  • aromatherapy
  • Orthomolecular Medicine
  • Behavior change
  • Energy treatment
  • Adjust nutrition and lifestyle
  • Lab studies

What is the treatment of psychosomatic complaints?

  • The most effective treatment for psychosomatic complaints is psychotherapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a particularly effective form of treatment for psychosomatic complaints.
  • In addition to psychotherapy, other forms of treatment can also be used to remedy psychosomatic complaints. Relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation, can help reduce the physical symptoms of psychosomatic complaints. Exercise can also be helpful in treating these symptoms as it reduces stress and improves mood.
  • It is important to remember that psychosomatic complaints can seriously disrupt daily life, and it is important to seek professional help if you think you have psychosomatic complaints. With the right treatment, it is possible to manage these complaints and lead a healthy and productive life.

What are the symptoms?

  • Symptoms of psychosomatic complaints can be: headache, fatigue, digestive problems, muscle pain, sleeping problems and concentration problems. Other common symptoms include anxiety, depression, frequent illness, panic attacks, and loss of interest in activities.

Psychosomatics is a branch of medicine and psychology that studies the relationship between psychological factors and the development of somatic diseases. That is, unresolved, “internally determined” stress situations manifest themselves through bodily manifestations.

Adults often emphasize that “all diseases are caused by nerves”, but for some reason only when it comes to themselves. When it comes to children's psychosomatics, fathers and mothers usually dismiss the possibility of such causes. And for nothing. A child is probably even more susceptible to psychosomatic disorders than an adult, because in childhood the skills to overcome tensions and experiences are not yet formed, there is increased emotionality and sensitivity.

I would also like to add that a child can have psychosomatic complaints from unprocessed emotions or traumas in their mother. This was a case with my daughter.
